Amish Boys In Dresses

I thought I'd share with you a little tidbit of information I discovered while visiting Pennsylvania Dutch Country. The Amish are a highly conservative group of families who even shun their own when they do not conform to their ultra stringent ideals. This beyond orthodox community has very strict gender roles and guidelines. I found it quite ironic that even within these strict roles there is a time when even Amish boys wear dresses. When born into an Amish family, prior to baptism, both male and female babies wear the same unisex garb. Amish boy infants wear dresses and the same shoes. I just can't get over the fact that even within the religious group we deem the most strictly "moral" in our culture there is room for cross dressing. I think it's hilarious that religious people always try to use their religion and especially the Bible to combat alternative behaviors while the Amish put their little boys in dresses. Obviously this has worked for them and I've never heard of there being a major problem with transgendered boys in the Amish community. This just goes to show that perhaps alternative lifestyles are not necessarily from learned behavior. hmm? If the Amish are cool about boys in dresses why aren't we?
