My Diamond in the Rough
" Look Grandpa that's just like the one we saw when we went to Philadelphia to Mama's doctor for her lady parts!" This is what I fear my bright, well spoken son will say to my in laws while they visit this week. Every time they visit we come closer and closer to revealing the big secret. So far we have somehow escaped the discussion. Now with Serenity talking more and more and with Chance's daily revelations, how much longer can we avoid the subject? We tend to have a little more control in our own home, but the plan this week is to go away with the whole family. How many times are we going to change the subject at dinner when the waiter refers correctly so to Beth as Ma'am while her parents see their son? How much longer can we play off Chance saying Mama rather than Daddy as an inside joke; especially now that Serenity too knows her Mama's name so well? There is so much of our life that my in laws are missing out on for fear that they will not accept coming out of the closet graciously. It's a shame they don't know Beth. If only they knew how amazing she is. They would be so proud if they knew how brave she has been to carry on with such strength and grace in the face of such adversity. I just hope that when the time comes it goes more smoothly than we expect. I hope that they can be loving and accepting. I hope they pass no judgement and they in time will be impressed with the daughter they have done such a fine job raising. Gender is irrelevant. Kindness, compassion and intelligence are qualities not defined by gender, which should be treasured.
