Gay Family Cruise

Last night I stayed up way too late watching t.v. I got really into this show on HBO about Rosie O'Donnell and her family on a cruise. The really great thing was that she chartered a cruise ship for gay families and those that love them. The show was all about 700 families enjoying family time in a a judgement free environment. There were all different kinds of backgrounds and stories. It was amazing to see that there are so many healthy, productive, well rounded, normal gay families which share our situation. They all had a blast. There were all different ages, races and genders represented, all with or in the process of making families. I would Love to take our family on a cruise like this where we could openly be so free without judgement. I wish the whole world were so safe. I never realized hoe many other people are in our shoes and I was happy to see their kids have had normal lives. There were some couples getting married on the cruise. There were parents with their gay kids and gay parents with loving children. Some families were in the process of adopting babies and some were using in vitro or surrogate mothers. It was beautiful to see so many strong, wonderful families openly sharing love without shame. It really was a blessing to see so much love and respect and community bonding. There were interviews with teens who've grown up as the children of two mothers or two fathers and they seem to be so well adjusted. Unfortunately on their last stop into Nassau they were ambushed coming off the ship by Christian protesters. There were two churches that were not welcoming of their presence and made small children cry while confronting the ship mates with microphones and megaphones. They were yelling that they were tired of homosexual activity in their community and complained that the "gays were using the tourist destination as a playground for sin". Ironic since it's that gay money that is helping their community to flourish. I felt such pride as these families held their heads high and continued to show strength in such a cruel moment of hatred. I was heartbroken that people would blatantly be so evil in the name of God scaring confused children and making them cry as their parents were being antagonized. Overall it was an terrific show and I am now convinced that we should attend a function sponsored for gay families. It would be really great to experience such camaraderie with other same sex parents who only want to protect and love their children while still openly loving each other. It would be a super opportunity to show our children that even though special, families come in all sorts and fashions with the common goal of love.
